Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is the most common hormonal disorder that affects those with ovaries. It is a complex condition that is still not entirely understood. Since the actual cause of PCOS is not known, getting a diagnosis can be difficult. It is estimated that up to 75% of those dealing with PCOS go undiagnosed. There are three main criteria for diagnosing an individual with PCOS: cysts on one or both ovaries elevated androgens (a class of hormones, like testosterone, that is stereotypically associated with “male” characteristics), and menstrual irregularities, such as missed periods. Typically health professionals will diagnose if two or more of these criteria are met. The Mediterranean diet or an anti-inflammatory diet are excellent methods to support PCOS symptoms.
