Ovarian Cancer
A severe and leading gynecological health condition in North America, ovarian cancer generally affects those with ovaries over 50 and is even more common over 60. Any cell types compromising the ovaries can become malignant, and in some cases, breast, colon and stomach cancers can metastasize to the ovaries. While symptoms are often vague and non-specific, ovarian cancer is typically discovered during pelvic CT scans or other diagnostic imaging. It commonly runs in the family, and genetic history of ovarian cancer in a relative can increase the risk. However, genes are not everything and do not necessarily guarantee the future. Choice of foods, for example, can have a very significant protective effect: abundant cruciferous vegetable consumption alone is associated with an 11% reduced risk.
