Melanoma is the most severe form of skin cancer. It starts in melanocytes, which are cells that produce melanin – the pigment that gives our skin its colour. Melanocytes are located in the deeper layers of the skin. The location of these cells creates a greater risk for this form of skin cancer to spread to the lymphatic system and bloodstream. While the cause of all melanoma cancers is not clear, exposure to UV radiation (from sunlight and tanning beds) increases one’s risk of developing the disease. While proper skin care and protection from the sun are essential therapeutic considerations, a diet high in antioxidants is the most important dietary consideration.
