Lyme disease gets its name from the town in Connecticut, where the disease was first identified in the ’70s. Lyme is not caused by a tick but rather the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi. Ticks simply transfer the bacteria when feeding on a host. The longer a tick is attached, the greater the risk for developing Lyme. Lyme disease symptoms are incredibly varied, making it hard to diagnose correctly. Diagnosis is only further complicated because the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi can go into and out of dormant phases, making blood tests potentially inaccurate. Luckily Lyme disease is treatable and can be managed through diet and lifestyle considerations.
