Histamine is a chemical that plays a role in many biological functions. It is responsible for many of the symptoms we experience related to allergies, such as running nose, itching, or sneezing. Certain conditions and medications may cause histamine intolerance. This occurs when our body cannot break down histamine effectively, and too much builds up in our system. While histamine is found in our cells, it is also found in some foods. There are even some foods that can trigger cells to release histamine. A low histamine diet aims at limiting dietary triggers and sources of histamine to reduce overall levels in the body.
