Leukemia is a cancer of the body’s blood-forming tissues. That can include anything from bone marrow to the lymphatic system but almost always involves white blood cells (WBC). WBCs are an integral part of our immune system and are primarily formed in bone marrow. Leukemia forms when the cell's DNA within bone marrow mutates and can no longer develop or function properly. These abnormal cells then pass into the bloodstream, which cannot typically be seen in imaging tests, unlike other cancers. Treating leukemia depends on the type, age, overall health, and whether it has spread throughout the body. It is crucial to maintain proper nutrition when managing leukemia symptoms as well as while recovering from the disease.
