Ketogenic Diet
The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, and moderate-protein diet. Carbohydrates are the preferred source of fuel for our bodies. Our bodies can enter a metabolic state known as ketosis in the nearly total absence of carbohydrates. Ketosis occurs when the body breaks down fat into molecules called ketones. Ketones replace carbohydrates (i.e. glucose) as the primary source of fuel. Ketosis only occurs when an individual consumes less than 5% of their total caloric intake from carbohydrates (around 20 grams). The ketogenic diet has been studied extensively as a therapeutic diet to reduce seizures in those with epilepsy. It also shows promising results in helping support conditions such as PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), metabolic syndrome, and diabetes.
