Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is an umbrella term used to describe conditions like Crohn's, colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). These conditions are characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract (i.e. the digestive tract). Although these conditions can be a permanent diagnosis, there are often periods of remission where little to no symptoms are present. A flare is the reappearance of symptoms like diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, weight loss and nausea. Treatment aims to bring the condition back into remission and keep it that way as long as possible. Treatment will vary based on the specific triggers of an individual, but an anti-inflammatory diet low in allergens is the standard diet.
