Hemorrhoids are very common and can be defined as enlarged or swollen sections of blood vessels, skin, and tissue around the rectal area. They are typically caused by decreased venous blood flow due to increased abdominal pressure from a variety of causes, including sitting for long periods of time, pregnancy, or strained bowel movements. Symptoms may include pain, itching, irritation and bleeding. A diet lacking in fibre is likely the single most common cause of hemorrhoids in the general population, and they are consequently very rare in cultures where dietary fibre is high.
