Crohn’s disease (CD) is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by recurrent intestinal inflammation. CD can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus. However, it most commonly affects the end of the small bowel (ileum) and the beginning of the colon. CD can cause a thickening of the GI lining. When inflamed, the gut produces excess mucus to line the GI wall. This protective mechanism can prevent nutrients from being absorbed properly, leading to various nutritional deficiencies. Dietary factors are the most important triggers for IBD, so adhering to a supportive diet is crucial to preventing flare-ups.
